Abstract

According to the author’s observation on the fourth-year students of Rangsit University in Thailand, it is found that students in this grade often make pragmatic errors when using Chinese to communicate. Therefore, in order to find out the causes of their pragmatic errors and suggestions on how to cultivate students’ pragmatic competence for ChineseThai pragmatic teaching, this paper uses the questionnaire survey method to investigate the pragmatic errors in Chinese language communication among 50 fourth-year students of Rangsit University in Thailand. After analyzing the survey results, it was found that the main reasons why these students made pragmatic errors in Chinese verbal communication was that they “did not understand the role of stress and intonation in Chinese communication”, “did not understand the usage of Chinese pronouns and words with cultural meaning”, “using native language grammar patterns”, “influenced by native language and native culture” and “unfamiliar with the Chinese way of thinking”, etc. For these reasons, the author puts forward some suggestions on how to cultivate students' Chinese pragmatic competence.
