Abstract

Online learning has been executed by higher institutions worldwide since COVID-19 hits the world. Online learning has been conducted synchronously and asynchronously by lecturers to ensure that undergraduate students are able to continue their studies as usual. The objective of this study is to explore the perspectives of students from Asian countries on online learning in English language classes. The students who participated in this study were from universities in Thailand, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Korea, and Japan. They have enrolled in an English language course and had online classes within two weeks. This study employed a qualitative approach in which the students expressed their opinions in the reflective journals, which were the instrument used by the researcher to analyze the students’ opinions from those countries pertaining to online learning. The findings indicated that the students obtained many benefits from online learning. Their opinions were distinctive as some of them voiced out that the online classes have increased self-confidence while having a conversation with peers from other countries. Meanwhile, the students from Malaysia claimed they gained interesting experiences in online learning by expanding their leadership skills during the discussions and improving their English listening skills. A few of them revealed that the online classes helped increase their knowledge of the cultures of different Asian countries. The study offers some implications for online learning which leads to academic improvements for undergraduate students.
