Abstract
Attitude towards research, digital competence, and research competence are vital for Higher Education Institutions’ (HEIs) faculty members since research involvement is expected before them even pandemic is on its way. Less number of research was conducted on how these three research aspects are interrelated with each other; moving the researcher to initiate the conduct of this study. This was undertaken to describe the number of published research papers, attitude towards research, digital competence, and research competence of one hundred and forty-two (142) conveniently selected faculty members of four (4) local colleges and universities in the National Capital Region, Philippines. How attitude of the respondents towards research is associated with their digital competence, and their research competence were also identified through correlational research method; and intervention plan was developed for faculty research upskilling. Data were collected via google form using the Attitude, Digital, and Research Competence Survey (ADRCS); and results revealed that the participating faculty members’ number of local, national, and international research publication did not reach to even an average of 1 (x ̅=0.423). The respondents had a positive attitude towards research (x ̅=3.068, sd=0.499), digitally competent (x ̅=3.250, sd=0.583), and research competent (x ̅=3.009, sd=0.482). A low positive and significant correlation between attitude and digital competence (r=0.366, sig. at 2-tailed=0.000), and a moderate positive and significant correlation between attitude and research competence (r=0.512, sig. at 2-tailed=0.000) was also obtained. Relationships indicated that as the attitude towards research gets positive, digital and research competence level up or vice versa. Findings suggest an intensive provision of research-related seminars, trainings, workshops, and other professional development activities to HEI faculty members using the developed faculty research upskilling intervention plan as guide for leaders and administrators. Furthermore, implications to HEIs’ initiatives towards enriching research involvement and strengthening research programs for their faculty members and whole institution were assumed.
