Abstract

As a multicultural and multilingual country, Malaysians are found to be utilizing code-switching in their daily verbal conversation, and this phenomenon is recently found to be evident in their written communication through the internet. The study reported in this paper concentrates on the reasons that predetermined the employment of code-switching within the context of Malaysian social media users. Information for the survey was collected by means of an online survey distributed through a social media platform named Twitter. The construction of the survey was built through the composition of Hoffman’s (1991) and Mustaffa’s (2014) established reasons of code-switching. The finding of the study revealed that ‘the simplicity of the word’ and ‘being accustomed to the habit’ as the most frequent reasons that lead the speakers to code-switch. Information gained from the study will help provide insight on the reasons Malaysian social media users employ code-switching in online interactions.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

DR. NOTTAKRIT VANTAMAY (Participant)

Your research is very interesting. What are the suggestions for future research?

Zulfati Izazi Zulkifli (Presenter)

Thank you for your question, Dr Vantamay.

I will start by explaining the challenge in the study. One of the challenges of this study is to gather responses from a large number of participants, as there is no strong incentive for social media users to participate in the survey, even if the survey managed to reach them digitally. On this basis, a more detailed study should be conducted; preferably in a manner where the participants may share their subjective thoughts and opinions free of any restricted scheme, such as a focus group. Moreover, it is suggested for a similar survey to be conducted on other social media platforms besides Twitter, as a wider explanation about the phenomenon of code-switching on social media as a whole will be able to be gathered.
