Abstract

COVID-19 pandemic exposed fragility in healthcare system and vulnerability related to health inequalities in the society. The paper discusses the power structures affecting access to healthcare and the quality of received care including factors like gender, ethnicity, social and economic status among others from an intersectional perspective. The healthcare policymakers, politicians and healthcare workers need to be equipped with an understanding the intersecting patterns of health inequality among people with diverse backgrounds in society. Factors which might not be visible to them and the way they interact with health and disease including factors such as ethnicity, social class, gender, education, religion, economy, size of family among others. The intersectional approaches help to recognize the ‘real problem’ and the roots of it; therefore, they prepare a ground for setting policies and planning strategies to decrease the health disparities. Addressing the structural and systemic racism within healthcare is substantial in attempts reducing health inequalities in the society. Without structural changes the health inequalities and vulnerabilities could not be diminished in societies, the conditions which intensifies during the pandemic.
