Abstract

“Salakkok Mangrove Community” is a community located on a large mangrove forest in Amphur Koh Chang, Trad Province. This community received a “Green Globe Award” in 2010, because this community implemented a successful integration between its original way of life and the eco-tourism concept. Setting up a group of local conservative and tour guides brought community members to participate in administration and development planning. The direction of this community development was profoundly aimed to be a pioneer community focusing on a “community-based tourism” that mainly conserved original way of life, natural resource, and peacefulness.  Nevertheless, on the other hand, the improvement of physical environment had not been adequately adopted in parallel.  This study has three objectives that are 1) to understand the “Salakkok” uniquely original way of life and the change of its inhabitants and its physical conditions emerging from socio-economics, 2) to understand what were the keys of conformity between community’s evolution for eco-tourism and its built environments, 3) to propose the guidelines of improvement of physical environment for this community.

This research was conducted by collecting qualitative data using means of on-site survey and interviews of target population.  Consequently, the answers from doing survey and analysis of community’s physical conditions has revealed as follows. Though, the obvious community’s strength were 1) setting up an “association for conservation and local guides” to manage tourist activities, also, 2) forming a “business unit for community” to involve in community’s development policy and administration. But, in terms of physical and built environment, many buildings, public areas, and private properties were in declined conditions and lack of development direction.

The improvement for “Salakkok” Mangrove Community’s built environment were finally suggested in 2

proposals that were; 1) To conduct architectural programming based on the context, ways of living, limitations, built environments, and economic and social conditions of the village 2) To propose site planning an architectural design approaches for the improvement of the village’s built environments to increase the value to the community, regarding to the concept of community-based tourism.

Hi ajarn Ohm. I 'm interesting about the community -based development project by people participation .I think this project is perfectly  procedure and good results but I would like to ask a question about the management of the project as follows ;

- Do you have strategy plan to complete this project  and who ought to be the main, developer ,community or government ?

-Do you think that your design guide lines  are suitable for the investment of private or public sector and why ?

thank you

Ohm Panatkool (Presenter)

Thank you for your question, K.Mallika.

- About to complete the project, according to  the CBT Concept,

I think Salakkok community have the good natural resouces, good mangement, and good support from the government but the built environments should have be advised by the expert.

- The guidelines that I suggested were based on the idea that the community can do by itself. In terms of investment, I think it's suitable for the non-profit private sector.

Because the guideline was designed for an overall image of the community that helps the sustainabilities of CBT.

Thank you.

The big problem with community tourism development is how to balance development and conservation and preserve resources that are shared interests within the community. The development of the new infrastructure of the community must, therefore, be very careful. Please discuss the suggestions on this issue in detail. Thank you.

Hi! Ajarn Ohm, Your presentation is very interesting.

I think the targeted tourists of this community are already interested in natural preservation. In your opinion, what kinds of activities shall be created so the tourists can enjoy learning and participating natural preservation while the community gets the benefits in terms of natural preservation from tourist's activities at the same time?

Thank you very much

Ohm Panatkool (Presenter)

K. Parisa, thank you for the question.

I think, Most of the tourism communities have the development strategy but in practicality,

it's very hard to implement. There is no indicator of how good what they did.

The most important thing is to understand what's the truly key of success and knowledge for the built environments.

Thank you.

Ohm Panatkool (Presenter)

K.Supattra, I think the key success of every tourism community is how long will the tourists spend in the community.

Adding the “Must” new experience doing list will give the tourist challenge themself.

In my opinion fishery experience will be an interesting activity for add on.
