IN20-295 Tools for Ideas: Making Conceptual Information More Tangible

Presenter: Ornicha Chayaratanasin

Abstract

Humans produce gestures while they are talking or explaining something. Their hands play a significant role in learning and cognition. According to several research papers, hands connect to the brain and enhance thinking ability. This research aimed to develop a tactile toolkit through a combination of the concept of “thinking with hands,” and creative brainstorming used to make conceptual information more tangible. The toolkit came in various materials. Each material, with its unique characteristics, could represent different situations, meanings, and thoughts, allowing users of the toolkit to relate their brains to their hand gestures in their verbal communication.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Hi Ornicha, thank you for your interesting presentation. I really enjoy the literature review part, I think you did a really good job about how interactive hands can be for design thinking. However, I find your final product is questionable.

1) How would the toolbox be different from the material catalog? If you see a floor tile catalog, for example, it looks more complete than the set of material that you proposed.

2) Have you thought about the idea of putting these pieces of material together to create a new prototype like a Lego?

Hi thank you for your questions

1)  The material catalogue is the same shape, same size of each one for the selector will not distract by shape and form. But for my design, I also design the form which can affect the thinking of the user too, in each form have different feeling and meaning that allow user to apply it in their context. The example of the first box set that I have made, it's just for practice user to focus on their feeling of texture, weight, temperature, etc. so it looks like a material catalogue, I will improve the form in the basic set to make it have more abstract form.

2) Yes, I have thought about that too because it will make my project can be more complex and more fun, but because I have made the different types of material so I have to find the joint that like a universal joint to connect it. It can be in future research.

It is an interesting article. However, unfortunately, the presentation of the part of "the results" is rarely mentioned. Can you explain more about the research methodology? In terms of data collection and data selection, and how it leads to achieving the proposed results such as texture, color, weight?

Anutorn Polphong (Participant)

The idea of cognitive learning through hand gesture or in this place through touching, an its application as a tools for creative thinkin, is surely interesting. It would be helpful if you could expand your thoughts on these selctions of material and shape for the tool box, and what might these shape and materials work together, or  how it might stimulate our mind or our creativity.

Thank you

Thank you for the question. My methodology is to study the psychological connection of hands and the brain, not by a statistic. From the study, I have applied to the designed which practice people to expanse the ideas in the brainstorming session. By chosen the different material to make in a different form because each material has their characteristic such as colour, brightness, rough, smooth, clear, unclear, simple, complex, etc., which can perceive by touching or seeing, and interpret in the meaning base on the visual structure.

Thank you for the question

The selection of material and shape, I have applied from the study about visual structure, focusing on how we perceive things and interpret the meanings.

The way of stimulating people to be creative is to practice people perceive the object by hands and eyes seeing the object not just what they are, but what they can be in the user context and beyond to the abstract word, abstract concept.
